Although the Snapdragon 820 has yet to reach the consumer market in a widely available smartphone, rumors surrounding the chipset’s sequel have already started to emerge from various corners of the Internet since late 2015.

Known as the Snapdragon 830, or by the codename / model number “msm 8998”, Qualcomm’s top-range chipset following the SD 820 reached our headlines once again today, after sources in China revealed more details about what might make it tick, such as a series of new and improved Kryo cores.

Snapdragon 830 Rumors Emerge
For the past year or so, i Ice Universe has been one of the most prolific leaksters from China, bringing us sneak previews on both the Snapdragon 820 as well as the Exynos 8890. More recently, the same source seems to have touched on the subject of Snapdragon 830, claiming that the chipset – also known as the “msm8998” – will boast an improved Kryo custom architecture and that it will be built using Samsung’s 10nm process.

Additionally, the Snapdragon 830 will apparently support up to 8 GB of RAM, and according to the source, it will be released in early 2017.

Other details remain unknown, which is to be expected given the fact that Qualcomm is still focused on the release of the Snapdragon 820. As yet we have no word on how many cores the Snapdragon 830 will have or the frequency at which they will operate, so it remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will continue on its fewer core path, or jump on the multi / octa / deca-core bandwagon as most of its competitors.
